Ashwell, Hertfordshire Wedding: A Masterclass in Doing It Your Own Way

As a Hertfordshire wedding photographer, I get to see so many beautiful venues, but this one was extra special because it started with a simple idea from someone who really knew what she was talking about.

Some weddings feel like a deep breath. Calm, bright, full of love, and completely, unmistakably them. Amelia and John created one of those days, a wedding that was warm, personal, and quietly brilliant from start to finish.

A Hertfordshire Church Wedding, Reimagined

Amelia’s mum, Suzanne (aka the magic behind Suzanne Humbert Floral Design), suggested their local church would make an incredible wedding venue, and honestly, she was spot on.

Their wedding took place at St Mary’s Church in Ashwell, a gorgeous historic setting with lovely light and a real sense of place. But here’s what made it unforgettable, the church wasn’t just the ceremony space. It became the dining hall and reception room too.

After the vows, the pews were flipped around, chairs were added, tables appeared, and suddenly this beautiful church transformed into the most atmospheric reception space. It felt intimate, creative, and a little bit like watching a set change in a film, only with more happy people and far better food.

Flowers Everywhere, Thanks to a Brilliant Floral Team

If you love flowers, you would have been in absolute heaven. Gayle and her team from Blooming Happy Florist were amazing and worked with Suzanne to create this stunning vision.

The florals were overflowing, lush, thoughtful, and full of character, an amazing display of flora and fauna that made the whole space feel alive. There’s something so moving about flowers created by someone who loves the couple fiercely. Every arrangement felt personal, like a visual love letter running through the day.

From a photography point of view, it was a dream, texture, colour, detail, and that soft glow you only seem to get in churches when the light plays nicely.

The Vibes: Gorgeous Light, Happy People, Zero Fuss

This day had it all, the kind of gorgeous summer light that makes everything look golden, a room full of people genuinely delighted to be there, and a couple who did not once try to squeeze themselves into a “should” version of a wedding.

It was relaxed, joyful, and confident. A total masterclass in making choices that actually reflect you.

Little Piggy Catering (Yes, They Were Brilliant)

A transformed church reception deserves food that matches the moment, and Little Piggy Catering absolutely delivered. Delicious, generous, and run with the kind of calm competence that makes the whole day feel easier. The sort of supplier you want in your corner.

A Cheese Wedding Cake (The Dream)

And then came the “cake”, in the best possible way.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake, Amelia and her partner went for a cheese wedding cake by Paxton Cheese, which is honestly one of my favourite ideas ever. It’s celebratory, it’s practical, it makes everyone happy, and it feels very fitting for a day that did everything its own way.

Getting Married at St Mary’s Church, Ashwell

If you’re planning a Hertfordshire church wedding and you want something that feels meaningful but still relaxed, St Mary’s in Ashwell is such a beautiful option. It has warmth, character, and (as Amelia proved) it can be transformed into a truly unique wedding venue with a little imagination and the right people.
